What Longport does to a window
Longport is the saltiest glass on Absecon Island. The oceanfront homes along Atlantic Avenue and the numbered streets take spray straight off the Atlantic on every east wind and dry a white film within days of a cleaning, and at Point Longport the inlet adds a second dose from the south and west, so the big window walls on the point get it from every direction. A nor'easter carries the spray clear across town to the bayfront, and on the sun side the film bakes on and starts to etch.
The sand is the second problem. Longport is flat, narrow and windy, and blowing sand scratches the lower panes and piles in the sliding-door tracks on every windy afternoon, heaviest in the fall and winter nor'easter season. In winter Atlantic Avenue and the Longport bridge approach are brined before every storm, and the spray off passing traffic dries into a white crust on the lower glass of homes near the road. The boat traffic through the inlet and the bay adds an exhaust film to anything facing the water, and the humid summer grows mildew inside the porch screens.
Most Longport homes do best on an every-two-months plan, and oceanfront and point homes usually want monthly from October through April when the wind is up. Many Longport houses sit closed for weeks in the off-season, which is exactly when salt film does the most damage, so we keep the schedule running year-round on any mild day. How often should windows be cleaned in Longport?
